I'm Oliver James, a writer focused on tanning and skincare, sharing tips for a safe, healthy glow.

I like to tan but hate sticky skin after tanning sessions. And I know how hard it is to resist jumping into the shower.

At first, I wasn’t familiar with tanning and aftercare methods, but learning and applying them left me with ample knowledge to offer.

Let me guide you through the process.

Post-Tanning Shower: How Long To Wait To Shower After Tanning Bed?

Shower 24 hours after using the tanning bed.

Experts recommend a pause of 2-4 hours to wait to shower after tanning bed. The sweet spot is usually around 2-4 hours.

As for me, I wait at least 2-3 hours (as per my skin type) after tanning, which is tough but necessary for a perfect tan.

I’d suggest the same for spray tanning. This method provides sufficient time for the skin to set its characteristic dark tone.

A shower after using a sunbed or tanning bed session may affect how the tan develops, interfere with melanin production, and diminish the life of your tan.

Shower Tips for a Lasting Tan

When it’s finally time to shower, remember the tips to keep your tan looking attractive:

Choose Lukewarm Water

If you want to shower, it’s best to use lukewarm water. It suits me after I step out of the tanning bed. Take note that hot water can wash away the tan in quicker time than normal.

Mild Soaps

Avoid using harsh soaps on a tanned body. Mild soaps are hypoallergenic, dye-free, and fragrance free.

Pat Yourself Dry

I suggest you don’t rub yourself with a towel while drying. It can make your tan come off unevenly.

Moisturize Quickly

Once you dry yourself, lock in moisture. It helps to hydrate your skin and amplify the dark tone.

What to Avoid After the Tanning Process

To make your tans last longer, follow the pointers below:

  • No Hot Baths or Saunas: Hot water and steam baths can open your skin’s pores, cause skin to shed, or erode your tan. Avoid these practices to keep your tan glowing for as long as possible.

  • Skip Tight Clothes: Tight clothes can rub against your skin and cause your tan to smudge.

  • Stay Away from Chlorine and Saltwater: Both chlorine and saltwater are dangerous for freshly tanned skin. They have enough power to strip away tan and natural oils, leaving your skin dehydrated and flaky.

N.B. For an even tan, measure the UV intensity and align your spent time under the rays.

More Tips To Prolong Your Tan

To ensure long-lasting tans, I’d suggest you to follow these methods:

  • Use Tan-Extending Lotions: Use body lotions designed to extend the tan. Using a tanning lotion helps retain tan for longer periods.

  • Don’t Exfoliate Too Much: While keeping your skin smooth is a necessary endeavor, over exfoliation can be risky. For me, I make sure to avoid exfoliating my skin after the tanning process. I scrub once a week to ensure a beautiful bronze appearance.

  • Use Sunscreen: If you think tan will protect you from UV rays, you’re wrong! You’ll also have to put on SPF before heading outdoors to extend the life of your dark, polished skin.

Enjoy Your Tanned Days!

I hope you understand the importance of not showering immediately after a sunless tan. This action can wash away the dark glow.

Wait 2 to 4 hours before using body wash. Follow the tips to ensure the best results and a longer-lasting darkened glow.
