I'm Oliver James, a writer focused on tanning and skincare, sharing tips for a safe, healthy glow.

When It was my first time getting a spray tan from a salon and I was so confused on what I should wear and what I shouldn’t. Hence I get you a lot, believe me.

This can get very troubling, especially when you are hella shy in going nude and don’t want to compromise your modesty and neither want to stain your clothes.

Fortunately, I did my research, so you don’t have to do it.

Do You Wear a Bra For a Spray Tan

To answer this question, I would be frank: skip the bra for a spray tan. Given that you crave that smooth bronze glow.

But hey! Don’t panic; you can still opt to wear underwear or go for a strapless option if you don’t want to risk tan lines, tan streaks, or smudging.

Some even prefer wearing a thong or a bikini, but I won’t recommend anything with a strap because it just looks odd (I’ve been there, done that!).

Here are some other essentials you need to keep just in case!

  1. Disposable loose-fitting clothing (preferably dark)

  2. Flip-flops or Open-Toed Shoes

  3. Hair Tie

  4. Barrier Cream

  5. Tanning Mitt or Application Wipes

  6. Post-Tan Moisturizer

Clothing You Should Avoid Wearing During a Spray Tan Session

Here are some types of clothing you should avoid wearing:

  1. Tight Clothing

  2. Light-Colored Fabrics

  3. Lace and Delicate Fabrics

  4. Sweaty or Moist Clothes

  5. Jewelry

Aftercare: Post Spray Tanning Session

Not everyone will tell you this, but aftercare is just as important as the prep for the session. Here are some bonus aftercare tips that you must keep in mind.

  • Avoid Showering or Sweating

After your session, it’s crucial to refrain from showering, exercising, or sweating for at least 6 to 8 hours. This allows the tanning solution to fully develop and sets the color properly. If you can, wait up to 12 hours for the best results.

  • Moisturize Regularly

After the initial development period (usually after 8-12 hours), start moisturizing your skin daily. Use a hydrating lotion or cream that is free from alcohol and exfoliating agents to help prolong your tan.

Avoid products with heavy oils, as they can cause the tan to fade unevenly.

  • Avoid Exfoliating Products

For the first week after your spray tan, avoid exfoliating scrubs, harsh soaps, and products with glycolic or salicylic acids. These can strip the tan and lead to uneven fading.

  • Limit Water Exposure

While you can shower after the development period, try to keep showers brief and avoid soaking in hot tubs or swimming pools for at least the first week. Chlorine and salt water can accelerate the fading of your tan.

  • Stay Away from Waxing or Hair Removal

Avoid waxing or any form of hair removal for at least 24 hours post-tan. This can irritate the skin and may affect the appearance of your tan.

Wrapping It Up

So, hopefully, my research and advice came in handy for you. Just remember, the best spray tan’s opportunity cost is your shyness. Skip the bra once, and you will get used to it in the future.

Being someone who was once in the same situation, I know now that it’s never that deep!
